Associate Town Planner / Senior Town Planner – Consultancy

Mid-Kent

£40,000 to £80,000 depending on seniority

A growing planning consultancy is looking for an experienced planning professional to take a leading role in delivering a varied portfolio of development projects across the region. This position offers genuine responsibility, direct client exposure and the chance to influence outcomes from the earliest stages of a project through to final decision.

The successful candidate will manage their own caseload of smaller schemes while also contributing specialist input to larger, more complex developments. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys shaping strategy, working closely with local authorities and guiding clients through the planning process with confidence.

Role Overview

This position combines independent project leadership with collaborative involvement in multidisciplinary work. The successful applicant will oversee planning submissions, coordinate with external specialists and maintain strong working relationships with clients, councils and consultees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project leadership on small and medium sized schemes, from initial brief to decision
  • Supporting major developments as part of a wider technical team
  • Attending client meetings and presenting recommendations
  • Building constructive relationships with planning officers and statutory bodies
  • Preparing, reviewing and submitting planning applications, appeal material and supporting evidence
  • Applying up to date planning policy, including emerging guidance on green belt and grey belt land
  • Managing timescales, budgets and client expectations
  • Providing guidance to junior colleagues and contributing to team development
  • Coordinating with external consultants across disciplines

Candidate Profile

The consultancy is seeking someone with a strong understanding of the planning system and the confidence to manage projects with autonomy.

Essential Requirements

  • Solid knowledge of UK planning legislation and local authority processes
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a planning consultancy or local authority (five years for Associate level)
  • MRTPI status, or actively progressing towards it
  • Experience in residential, commercial, green belt or grey belt planning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy under pressure
  • Full UK driving licence
