Just One Thing for Job Adverts

How can the late Dr Michael Mosley's Just One Thing idea translate to writing successful job adverts?

I have to say that I will miss Dr. Michael Mosley's inspiring work and personality. I have not tried his famous 5:2 diet, but I enjoyed his book Just One Thing.

The book's premise is simple: by changing just one thing a week or month, you can have a long-term effect on your health, life, or even business. Suggestions in the book include Intelligent exercise, cold showers, drinking more water, eating beetroot, standing on one leg, getting houseplants, and learning a new skill. Each of these should have a small benefit. Cumulatively, they could make a significant difference to your life.

It is easy to transfer this concept to the world of job advertising.

Writing an effective job advert covers many areas, and improving one small thing every time can have a cumulative impact on your advertising success.

Think about your advert from the job seeker's point of view. Just one thing could be the important one which makes the advert jump out and attract the right person.

Points to consider are:

  • An attractive Job Title. Use one a job seeker might search for rather than something off the wall.
  • Show the Salary to ensure candidates at the right level apply.
  • Mention Benefits on offer.
  • Be clear on the Hours expected. Full-time, part-time, flexible.
  • Work Location. Is the role working in the office, at home, or hybrid?
  • Write an advert rather than copying the job description. Investing time at this stage can make the opportunity more attractive.

Just One Thing could be the difference in attracting the right candidate. It will change their life and the company they work for and make your recruitment business more successful.

Michael, Thank you for the inspiration.
