Sheffield: A Hub of Work Opportunities for Students and Postgrads
University is the ideal time to build your CV and make some money on the side. Thankfully, there are many job opportunities for those living in Sheffield. You might be currently studying, or maybe you’re wondering what jobs are available when you graduate. There’s lots to discover! We’ve put together a list of ideas to help.
Retail
Working in a clothes shop or a supermarket can help you build on skills like communication and problem-solving. Students will be happy to hear that Sheffield has many retail job opportunities. Meadowhall shopping centre has 290 stores and 50 restaurants. It’s open from 10am until 9pm which is flexible for fitting in work around studies. Meadowhall also has transport links for convenience like buses and the tram. The Yellow Line Supertram route runs every 10 minutes and has stops at the city centre and Sheffield University.
Barista and Bar Work
Working in a café or bar can help you learn several skills. Multitasking, teamwork and working under pressure are just some things you could add to your CV. Many places like these are open to hiring students part-time. Keep an eye out in windows and online for job advertisements. Ecclesall Road is three miles long and is full of cafes and bars. It’s also a popular place for students to live and hang out. Commutes to work can take time, but having your workplace on your doorstep is convenient. The city centre is also full of hospitality opportunities and has lots of transport links.
Freelancing
Some students will like the idea of having a job related to their field of study. If you’re doing a degree in mathematics, you could freelance as a tutor for those struggling with the subject. If you study art, you could create your own colouring book and sell it online or locally. If you attend The University of Sheffield, you’ll have access to mySkills. This is the university’s skills development platform, where you can record your personal development and create a skills profile. Anything you learn from your freelance work; you can reflect on here and add to your CV. Freelancing can give you experience, which is desirable for future employers.
Graduate Schemes
If you’re finishing university soon, you’re probably starting to think about the future. Some careers can be difficult to get into, as many employers look for experience. Graduate schemes are useful for helping people get their foot in the door. They typically last from one to four years and will give you experience through a structured training program. Some companies that have these will take on anyone who has a degree, whereas others only recruit recent graduates. Doing one of these schemes can help you enter sectors like law, media, healthcare, engineering and more. If you look around, you may be able to find a paid internship, too. Although these usually don’t last as long as a graduate scheme, they’re still useful for gaining experience. If you’re unsure of what to do after finishing your studies, your university will be able to give you advice and guidance.
