Recruitment Tops ‘UK’s Happiest Industries’ in New Study
If you asked most people to guess which industry has the UK's happiest employees, few would leap to say “recruitment”.
However, a new study reports that recruiters report significantly higher work satisfaction than those they place, even in high-paying, prestigious roles.
A workplace analysis led by London career coach Kasia Siwosz examined sentiment from 100,000 employee self-reports across 294 companies.
It compared 16 major industries across key metrics like progression prospects, diversity, leadership, and work-life balance.
The top performers, overall:
- Recruitment (4.02/5)
- Energy/Utilities (3.81/5)
- Legal (3.74/5)
- FinTech (3.68/5)
- Hospitality (3.66/5)
Lawyers and civil servants are winning on work/ life balance
- Government employees reported remarkably strong work-life balance scores (3.95), handily outperforming private sector roles, which you might expect to offer greater flexibility.
- Equally surprising, legal professionals – a group stereotyped by punishing hours and high burnout rates – scored an impressive 3.80 for work-life balance.
A logistical nightmare
The logistics sector registered the lowest satisfaction scores in the study (3.04), with particularly troubling results regarding senior management.
With a leadership rating of just 2.78, logistics was the only industry to score below 3.0 in multiple categories.
This leadership disconnect is most acute at parcel delivery companies, with some firms recording CEO approval ratings as low as 7%, among the lowest ever documented in the entire research set.
These concerning figures come during a period of growth for the sector, raising questions about the sustainability of current delivery business models.
Are we in a leadership crisis?
In 10 of the 16 industries, senior management received the lowest category ratings, with an alarming average of just 3.22 across all sectors.
The exception was recruitment firms, where leadership effectiveness scores nearly 20% higher than the cross-industry average.
Beyond the pay cheque
Traditional high-compensation sectors, including Banking (3.61) and Information Technology (3.55) scored lower in overall satisfaction than Hospitality (3.66), despite the latter's considerably more modest pay scales.
The hospitality sector also emerged as a diversity and inclusion leader with an exceptional 4.02 rating in this category.
This research analysed over 100,000 employee reviews from May 2023 to 2025, with companies selected based on market capitalisation, industry classifications, and sector representation.
